The META, REFORMA/SJSU Mentor Program, is designed to
recruit, encourage and support bilingual and /or bicultural individuals
in the SJSU School of Library and Information Science.
REFORMA was founded in Dallas, Texas, in 1971 to promote
quality library service to Latinos. REFORMA has lobbied successfully to
increase Latino representation in the library profession, to increase
funding and support for Spanish language collection development, and to
raise national awareness of the informational and service needs of
Latinos. REFORMA provides local and national scholarships to library
school students who share our goals.
The mission of the SJSU School of Library and
Information Science is to educate library and information professionals
through the development of programs that foster a broad understanding of
the theories, issues, technologies, and values required to provide
information services to diverse populations.
The School offers courses leading to careers in public,
school, academic and special libraries, as well as a wide range of
non-traditional settings.
The SJSU distance education program started in 1989.
Currently the School of Library and Information Science offers classes
in San Jose, Fullerton, San Diego, San Marcos, Pasadena, Sacramento,
Sonoma, and San Francisco. The total number of SLIS students statewide
makes it the largest graduate MLIS program in the United States.
